Retail Enterprise Solutions Engineer - Shopify

Job Description

As a Retail Solutions Engineer for our Enterprise team in North America (US and Canada), your role is crucial in breaking down technical barriers and guiding high-growth, high-volume, and complex merchants on how to accelerate their business growth with Shopify. You will consult with enterprise-level merchants to optimize their omnichannel needs, commerce technology stack, and business objectives while demonstrating how to best leverage the Shopify retail platform and ecosystem.

This role requires a balance of 60% business acumen and 40% technical skills, reflecting the importance of understanding and addressing the complex business needs of our enterprise clients while providing robust technical solutions.

As a subject-matter expert on the Shopify Retail platform (POS, online, mobile, hardware), and the Shopify platform as a whole, you will advise on best practices around complex integrations and provide solutions to set enterprise clients up for long-term success.

Solutions Engineers are strong advocates for Shopify and personify the brand, values, and product.

This role includes merchant-facing activities, such as remote and on-site engagements with enterprise merchants and supporting community events across North America. Travel throughout the US or Canada is required to meet with clients, attend industry events, and provide on-site support. You will be partnering with large and enterprise Shopify Retail merchants in the US and Canada, and serve as a key source of insight to provide feedback to Shopify's Product, Engineering, and Revenue teams. This position will report to the North American Retail Enterprise Solutions Engineering Lead.

Requirements for the role:

  • Strong and referenceable experience in Retail related pre-sales solutions engineering, with a focus on enterprise clients
  • Expertise in unified/omnichannel commerce, enterprise-level retail/point of sale systems, Shopify, North American specific commerce applications, ecosystems, and integrations
  • Strong enterprise-level client communication skills and a proven track record in stakeholder management
  • Excellent troubleshooting and analytical skills along with a desire to tackle complex enterprise challenges head-on
  • A mindset aligned with experimentation, continuous learning, and teaching, with the ability to support our growing enterprise retail customers, partner agencies, and internal teams
  • In-depth understanding of enterprise retail and omnichannel best practices, including the process of migrating large-scale operations from other platforms to Shopify
  • Proficiency with web APIs (GraphQL), enterprise retail solutions, order management systems, inventory management systems, middleware development, and front-end development
  • Strong time management and prioritization skills, with the ability to simultaneously support a diverse portfolio of enterprise merchants
  • Proven ability to thrive in a fast-paced, dynamic environment, with a growth mindset and a high level of adaptability
  • Solid understanding of cloud-based technologies, SaaS fundamentals, and their application in enterprise retail environments
  • Experience in conducting thorough discovery sessions with enterprise clients to uncover business needs and technical requirements
  • Willingness and ability to travel throughout the US or Canada for client meetings, industry events, and on-site support

Highly Desired Experience:

  • Experience working with Fortune 500 companies and major retail brands
  • Experience with other retail systems, providing valuable insight into migration challenges and opportunities for enterprise clients

Your responsibilities will include:

  • Support our enterprise sales and partner teams through various channels and high-level engagements
  • Share your learnings and best practices with the rest of the Retail Enterprise team, constantly improving and iterating to be a trusted advisor on our ever-expanding Shopify platform and ecosystem
  • Advise enterprise merchants (including their development partners) on technical solutions to ensure optimum business success on the platform
  • Create customized product demos and proofs of concept for use in live or recorded virtual client demonstrations for major retail brands
  • Explore creative ways to extend and develop on the platform to meet enterprise-level requirements, and respond to inquiries about our APIs
  • Mentor and coach the enterprise sales team on the technical aspects of Shopify
  • Act as an advocate and trusted advisor for enterprise merchants at all times, bringing your insights and knowledge to our product teams
  • Build bidirectional relationships with various teams within Shopify, including Product teams, Launch, Service Delivery, Sales, Merchant Success, Risk & Legal, and others
  • Stay informed about North American retail trends, regulations, and market dynamics that affect our enterprise clients
  • Conduct comprehensive discovery sessions with enterprise merchants to uncover their specific business needs, technical requirements, and potential challenges in adopting or optimizing Shopify's platform
  • Leverage your understanding of cloud-based technologies and SaaS fundamentals to propose innovative solutions that align with enterprise merchants' business objectives
  • Translate complex technical concepts related to cloud infrastructure and SaaS models into clear, actionable insights for both internal teams and enterprise clients
  • Travel to client sites, industry events, and other locations as needed to provide in-person support and representation
